Packing List for India in Winter

North India during winter (November to February) is magical, but it requires smart packing. The temperatures in Varanasi and surrounding regions can drop to a chilly 5°C at night, while staying a pleasant 20°C during the day. Here is your ultimate guide to staying comfortable.
1. The Power of Layering
The key to North Indian winters is layers. Mornings on the Ganges for sunrise boat rides are cold. Pack a mix of:
- Lightweight thermal inner-wear.
- A medium-weight jacket or a stylish trench coat.
- Large, warm woollen shawls (easily available in Banaras!).
2. Spiritual Etiquette: Modest Clothing
Whether you're visiting the Kashi Vishwanath Temple or the Sarnath ruins, modesty is respected. Long skirts, linen trousers, and full-sleeved tops are ideal. Avoid shorts and sleeveless tops when visiting religious sites.
3. Footwear for Ancient Lanes
Varanasi involves a lot of walking through narrow "galis". Bring comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes. Ensure they are easy to slip on and off, as you will be removing them frequently at the entrance of temples.
4. Sun and Skin Care
The winter sun in India is deceptively strong. Pack a good SPF sunscreen, lip balm, and moisturizer. The dry winter air can be harsh on the skin.
